Demonstrating Patented Design
|
Back in the Old Days, folks didn’t have remote controls. Gas-powered engines were too heavy for models, and the Ford Mustang came in a groovy teal metallic color. In this 1976 image, William Walter (bio, history) takes his HedgeHopper™ up on a ½-diameter air cushion to demonstrate how his newly patented design (technology, markets) improved upon conventional skirtless air cushion craft (ACC). You can see Bill’s hands on a homemade rheostat, regulating juice from the Mustang’s battery, through that pair of white wires, to the HedgeHopper’s electric motor. Bill handcrafted this 1/12-scale model with balsa model spars, aluminum flashing, and an array of swappable electric motor & wooden fan/propeller combinations.
